Acrylic on corrugated zinc

108⅝ x 210¼ x 1⅝ in.

Negro Crossing portrays the Middle Passage of the Black Exodus. Corrugated iron is a material ubiquitous with African ingenuity and resilience and is most commonly used for housing, food stalls, markets and shelters. On this metal, a door or portal is painted in white – both an access point and “door of no return.” This reflects not only the trans-Atlantic slave trade route, but also a quest for sanctuary beyond the physical realm.
