Referecincing the Nkisi practice of drilling nails into wooden dolls, Oluseye imagines the heroic Yoruba deity of iron, Ogun, throwing axes at a hand-carved emblem of the Black Panther Party. Axes, a symbol of Ogun’s reign and power, connect the Yoruba mythology of Ogun with the resilience of the Black Panther Party. This syncretization of Ogun and the Black Panther Party engages with the African diasporic experience, along with themes of activism, African spirituality and popular culture.
